A first look is a photo session where the couple sees each other for the first time before the ceremony. It usually lasts between 15 and 30 minutes. It is best to schedule it one to two hours before the guests arrive, so that the ceremony can start on time and there is enough time for everything else.

A first look is a moment when the couple sees each other before the ceremony, usually in private. Sometimes, however, they may invite some relatives, friends, or members of the bridal party to witness this special occasion.

  • Arrange for two photographers to be there so that they can capture the reactions of both you and your partner.
  • Write letters or notes to read to each other before the big reveal!
  • Give your wedding gifts to each other during the first look.
  • Do a “first look prank”!

First looks are already a bit non-traditional. Try to make use of your environment to find interesting and unique vantage points. You also want to make sure that the surprise isn’t spoiled!

This will obviously depend on the time of your wedding ceremony. At the very least, it will be before that 🙂 Ideally, aim for at least one hour before the ceremony if possible. You want to be dressed and ready to go, but want to do this before guests start arriving.

Supervision is key. I like to keep the groomsmen and bridesmaids involved in this process as much as possible. Not only does it give the bride and groom a distraction, but they can help guide them to the right locations and help with preparations.
